Client Frequently Asked Questions

At Central Coast Land Services, we specialize in general engineering, landscaping, vegetation management, and rural road construction. Below are answers to some of the most common questions our clients ask. These FAQs are designed to help you better understand our services, equipment, and approach to projects.

What size material can you mulch?

Our CAT 299 Skid Steer Rubber-Tracked Loader is most efficient mulching material up to 6 inches in diameter. Our excavator (“brontosaurus”) handles similar-sized material and is ideal for tougher or larger-scale projects.

What does mastication service cost?

Cost depends on three primary factors:
1. Type and density of vegetation
2. Terrain and topography
3. Number of trees or specimen plants to remain

Other site-specific conditions may affect pricing, which we will review during consultation.

What geographic area do you cover?

We typically work within 200 miles of Santa Cruz, CA. Projects outside this area may still be possible depending on scope — contact us to discuss.

What kind of follow-up treatment is necessary?

This varies by site and project goals. Our team has experience across diverse conditions and works with environmental professionals when specialized follow-up is needed.

How much experience do you have?

Our owner and operators bring thousands of machine hours in vegetation mastication, rural road construction, landscaping, and general engineering. Our background in construction and agriculture spans decades, backed by a B.S. in Agricultural Systems and the Environment from UC Davis.

Does this work require permits?

It depends on site conditions, jurisdiction, and project scope. We are experienced in permitting and can guide you through the process if permits are needed.

What other services can you provide?

Our equipment is designed for quick attachment changes. In minutes, we can switch from a mulching head to a bucket or grapple. Additional services include:
- Excavation & grading
- Stump grinding
- Post-hole drilling
- Jobsite cleanup
- Road improvements for private, state, municipal, and utility clients

What access space is required?

This depends on your site layout. In many cases, a site visit is the best way to determine access requirements and ensure a low-impact solution.

How long does mastication or vegetation management take?

Time depends on acreage, vegetation density, terrain, and site access. During a site visit, we provide an estimated timeline tailored to your project.

Is mastication environmentally friendly?

Yes. Mastication reduces fire fuel loads, eliminates the need for hauling or burning, and leaves behind beneficial mulch that improves soil health and reduces erosion.

Can you work on steep or uneven terrain?

Yes. Our rubber-tracked loaders and excavators are designed for stability on slopes and uneven ground, making them suitable for rugged conditions.

Do you handle dust control during road work?

Yes. We use water buffalos and trailers for dust suppression, soil compaction, and safe working conditions.

What kind of road repair services do you provide?

We perform grading, base repair, culvert installation, erosion control, and asphalt patching to restore or improve rural roads, access routes, and utility corridors.

Do you provide estimates or site evaluations?

Yes. We offer site visits and consultations to assess the project scope, equipment requirements, and environmental considerations before providing a detailed estimate.

Can you coordinate with other contractors or agencies?

Yes. We frequently partner with utilities, municipalities, state agencies, and private landowners to complete projects efficiently and in compliance with regulations.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Central Coast Land Services is a licensed general engineering and landscape contractor with full insurance coverage for equipment, crew, and project sites.
